Black bear captured near Richmond bridge euthanized

A young black bear captured Tuesday near the north end of the Boulevard Bridge had injuries so severe, the animal had to be euthanized, a biologist from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said Wednesday.

The 25-pound male bear, which apparently was hit by a vehicle, suffered a shattered left leg and likely internal injuries, said Game and Inland Fisheries district biologist Aaron Proctor.

Game and Inland Fisheries biologists rarely euthanize captured bears and don’t make the decision lightly, Proctor said.

“Way more often than not, it’s a good story,” he said. “It didn’t work out good in this case.”

There have been at least two other bear sightings in the Richmond area in the past week.

On Friday, a bear was reported at Parham Road and Interstate 64 in Henrico County, Proctor said. On Sunday, a post in the Forest Hill neighborhood’s Facebook group said a bear had been spotted in an alley near West 33rd Street.
